Who we are
JaquansList (jaquanslist.com) is a community directory of Black-owned and Black-adjacent businesses, with a community events calendar and an email newsletter. It is operated by Jaquan Levons in Pennington, New Jersey.
What we collect
- Business listings. When an owner submits a listing we store the business details they provide (name, description, category, location, website, social links, images) and the owner's name, email address, bio, and optional photo. The owner's email is never shown publicly.
- Website analysis. If an owner enters a website URL, we fetch that public page and send its text to Anthropic's Claude API to pre-fill the form. Only the public page content is sent.
- Reply-by-email updates. If an owner replies to a confirmation email, the reply is processed by our email provider (Resend) and Claude to update the listing. Replies are not published.
- Events. Event submissions include the organizer's name and email. The email is not shown publicly.
- Newsletter. Email address and optional first name, with the date and IP address of confirmation for anti-abuse purposes. We use double opt-in; nothing is sent until the address is confirmed.
- Reviews. Star ratings and comments left on the site are stored in your own browser only (local storage) and are not sent to us.
- Technical logs. Our hosting provider (Netlify) keeps standard server logs, including IP addresses, for security and reliability.
How we use it
- To publish and maintain approved listings and events.
- To send transactional email: submission confirmations, approval notices, edit links, and admin notifications.
- To send the newsletter to confirmed subscribers, and to stop sending when you unsubscribe or an address bounces.
- To keep the site secure and prevent abuse.
We do not sell personal information and we do not use advertising trackers.
Who we share it with
Service providers that process data on our behalf: Netlify (hosting, storage), Resend (email delivery), and Anthropic (AI text extraction). Each is bound by its own privacy terms. Public listing details are, by design, visible to anyone.
Your choices
- Every newsletter includes a one-click unsubscribe link.
- Business owners can edit their listing at any time with the personal edit link in their confirmation email, and can request removal from the same page.
- To access, correct, or delete anything else we hold about you, email us and we will respond within 30 days.
Cookies and storage
We do not set tracking cookies. The site uses browser local storage for your own conveniences: view preferences, collapsed filters, and reviews you have written.
Data retention
Approved listings stay until the owner asks for removal. Rejected submissions are deleted after 90 days. Newsletter records are kept until you unsubscribe, after which the address is retained only on a suppression list so we do not email you again.
Children
JaquansList is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect their information.
Changes
If this policy changes materially we will update the date above and note the change on the site.
